Planning and realization of applications

Specification of the machine vision application
- Requirement & system specification

Prior to the final realisation, a number of issues must be clarified. An accurate pre-evaluation helps the consumer as well as the system integrator to be secure from surprises and disappointments. After compiling the requirements specification and conducting laboratory or field tests, a tender is written. The resulting specification sheet describes the terms of reference in detail and the solution provided by the systems trader.

Typical details in specifications for image processing applications

  • General information about the company, contact person, available resources, deadlines
  • Description of the terms of reference
  • Description of the test object, the critical features
  • Number of test objects and their special variations
  • Possible object variations - microscopic shape properties
  • Impurities, object contamination etc.
  • Possible acceptance procedures
  • Required measuring accuracy of the machine vision system
  • Required signals and data interfaces
  • Used signals and needed communication interfaces
  • Hardware requirements, cable lengths, control cabinets, etc.
  • Additional services, such as test arrangement, training, documentation

Requirement & System specification VDI / VDA / VDMA 2632-2

Machine vision has been used for more than four decades. Optical inspection works "differently" than manual visual inspections or tactile inspection methods.  It is therefore particularly important for the user and system provider to harmonise the requirements for the inspection system, the prevailing framework conditions and a possible technical system solution.
In November 2024, the VDI/VDE (3rd edition) published a comprehensive set of requirements and specifications for machine vision applications - a very helpful publication that I personally use all the time.

The G3 initiative, in which important image processing associations have joined together to form an international consortium, recommends VDI/VDE/VDMA 2632 Sheet 2 for the creation of specifications and requirements specifications for industrial image processing systems. The standard is available in German, English and Chinese.
